Ingredients:

  • 1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu
  • 1 tbsp avocado oil
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1.5 tbsp cornstarch
  • 0.25 tsp sea salt
  • 0.25 tsp black pepper

Instructions:

  1. Remove the tofu from its packaging and discard the liquid.
  2. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel and place a heavy skillet on top for 10 minutes. Note: Removing this excess water is the single most important step for crunch.
  3. Cut the block into 1 inch cubes. Try to keep them uniform so they cook at the same rate.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the avocado oil, soy sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add the cubes to the bowl and toss gently until every side is dark and glossy.
  6. Sprinkle the cornstarch over the marinated tofu and toss again until no large white clumps remain.
  7. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for 3 minutes before adding the food.
  8. Place the tofu in the basket in a single layer. Leave space for the air to whistle between them.
  9. Cook for 15 minutes. At the 8 minute mark, remove the basket and give it a vigorous shake.
  10. Continue cooking until the edges are deeply golden and the surface looks dry and crackled.
