Ingredients:

  • 2 fl oz High-Proof Rye Whiskey (e.g., Rittenhouse 100 proof)
  • 1 fl oz Italian Amaro (e.g., Amaro Averna)
  • 1 dash Aromatic Bitters (e.g., Angostura)
  • 1 dash Black Walnut Bitters
  • Sufficient Ice (large, dense cubes)
  • 1 Quality Brandied Cherry (e.g., Luxardo), for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Chill the Glass: Place the serving glass (coupe or Nick & Nora) into the freezer or fill it completely with ice water. This ensures the final cocktail stays cold.
  2. Combine the Spirits: Add the Rye Whiskey (2 fl oz / 60 ml), the Amaro (1 fl oz / 30 ml), one dash of Aromatic Bitters, and one dash of Black Walnut Bitters directly into the mixing glass.
  3. Add Ice and Stir: Fill the mixing glass about two-thirds full with large, dense ice cubes. Insert the bar spoon and stir gently but deliberately for 20 to 30 seconds. Stir until the mixing glass is thoroughly frosted and the mixture is icy cold to ensure sufficient dilution.
  4. Strain and Serve: Empty the chilling ice/water from the serving glass. Place the strainer over the mixing glass and strain the cocktail cleanly into the chilled glass.
  5. Garnish: Place the brandied cherry at the bottom of the glass or gently slide it onto a small cocktail pick, resting it on the rim. Serve immediately.
