Ingredients:

  • 1/2 lb (225 g) ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 2 slices American cheese (or processed cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil or neutral cooking oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 2 hero rolls or hoagie rolls (about 6 inches / 15 cm each)
  • 1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, sliced
  • Mayonnaise
  • Ketchup or hot sauce (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Vegetables: Finely chop the onion, slice the tomato, and shred the lettuce. Set aside.
  2. Cook the Beef and Onions: Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onions and cook for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Add ground beef, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Break up the meat with spatula while cooking evenly until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.
  3. Add Cheese: Reduce heat to low. Place cheese slices directly on top of the chopped beef mixture. Allow melting for about 1-2 minutes. Stir gently to combine and distribute melted cheese evenly.
  4. Toast the Rolls (Optional): Slice rolls open and toast briefly in another pan or toaster oven until just golden.
  5. Assemble the Sandwich: Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the inside of each roll (adjust to taste). Add a generous layer of chopped cheese beef mixture. Top with shredded lettuce and tomato slices.
  6. Serve immediately while warm and juicy.
