Ingredients:
- 1/2 lb (225 g) ground beef (preferably 80/20 for juiciness)
- 1 small yellow onion, finely chopped
- 2 slices American cheese (or processed cheddar)
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil or neutral cooking oil
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- 2 hero rolls or hoagie rolls (about 6 inches / 15 cm each)
- 1/2 cup shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1 medium tomato, sliced
- Mayonnaise
- Ketchup or hot sauce (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Vegetables: Finely chop the onion, slice the tomato, and shred the lettuce. Set aside.
- Cook the Beef and Onions: Heat oil in skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onions and cook for 2-3 minutes until translucent. Add ground beef, season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Break up the meat with spatula while cooking evenly until browned and fully cooked through, about 5-6 minutes.
- Add Cheese: Reduce heat to low. Place cheese slices directly on top of the chopped beef mixture. Allow melting for about 1-2 minutes. Stir gently to combine and distribute melted cheese evenly.
- Toast the Rolls (Optional): Slice rolls open and toast briefly in another pan or toaster oven until just golden.
- Assemble the Sandwich: Spread mayonnaise and ketchup on the inside of each roll (adjust to taste). Add a generous layer of chopped cheese beef mixture. Top with shredded lettuce and tomato slices.
- Serve immediately while warm and juicy.
