Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (400g) long-grain white rice (e.g., Basmati or long-grain American rice), rinsed until the water runs clear
  • 4 cups (950ml) cold water
  • 1/2 teaspoon (3g) salt (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon (15ml) unsalted butter or neutral oil (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Place rice in a fine-mesh sieve and rinse under cold running water until the water runs clear. Drain well.
  2. In the saucepan, combine the rinsed rice, water, salt (if using), and butter or oil (if using).
  3. Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, immediately reduce the heat to the lowest setting possible.
  4. Cover the saucepan tightly with the lid. Simmer for exactly 18 minutes. Do not lift the lid during this time.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for 10 minutes.
  6. After 10 minutes, remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork. Serve immediately.
