Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
- 1 large yellow onion, chopped (approx. 1 cup/150g)
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped (approx. 1 cup/150g)
- 1.5 pounds (680g) ground beef (80/20 blend recommended for flavor)
- 1 teaspoon (5 ml) garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) black pepper
- 1 (15 ounce/425g) can tomato sauce
- 1 (6 ounce/170g) can tomato paste
- 1/2 cup (120 ml) ketchup
- 1/4 cup (60 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons (30 ml) brown sugar, packed
- 1 tablespoon (15 ml) yellow mustard
- 6 hamburger buns
Instructions:
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and green pepper and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, draining off any excess grease.
- Stir in garlic powder and black pepper.
- Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and yellow mustard to the skillet.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low. Cook, uncovered, for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the flavors have melded. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed (more brown sugar for sweetness, more mustard for tang).
- Spoon a generous amount of the Sloppy Joe mixture onto each hamburger bun.
- Serve immediately and enjoy with your favourite sides.
