Ingredients:
- 700g (24 oz) Russet Potatoes, peeled (if desired) and cut into 1/4-inch thick fries
- 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil (or other high-heat oil)
- 1 teaspoon Sea Salt, or to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
- 1/2 cup Mayonnaise (120ml)
- 2 Tablespoons Ketchup (30ml)
- 1 Tablespoon Sweet Pickle Relish (15ml)
- 1 teaspoon White Vinegar (5ml)
- 1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder
- 1/4 teaspoon Paprika
- 1 medium Yellow Onion, thinly sliced (approx. 150g)
- 1 Tablespoon Butter (15g)
- 1 teaspoon Vegetable Oil
- Pinch of Salt
- Pinch of Sugar (optional, but recommended)
- 150g (5 oz) American Cheese Slices (or your favorite melting cheese, such as cheddar or Monterey Jack)
Instructions:
- Cut potatoes into fries. Toss with oil, salt, and pepper.
- Bake in oven at 400°F (200°C) until golden brown and crispy. Alternative: Deep fry in oil until golden brown.
- Whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, pickle relish, white vinegar, garlic powder, and paprika in a bowl. Taste and adjust seasonings to create the signature animal style fries spread.
- Melt butter and oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, salt, and sugar (if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized.
- Place cooked fries on a plate. Top with cheese slices. Place under the broiler or in a preheated oven briefly until the cheese melts.
- Drizzle generously with the spread and top with the caramelized onions. Serve immediately.
