Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons (30 ml) unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup (30 g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups (473 ml) whole milk
  • 1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup (25 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour until smooth. Cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux. This removes the raw flour taste.
  3. Slowly whisk in the milk, a little at a time, ensuring there are no lumps.
  4. Add the sugar, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and salt. Whisk until well combined and smooth.
  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, stirring constantly, until it thickens to your desired consistency (about 5-7 minutes). Watch closely to prevent scorching.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  7. Serve warm immediately over biscuits (or desired side).
